The series begins in the Western Republic, a materially capable order with a thin moral core, whose outward stability conceals a deeper rot. In the far-flung Arctic Cryonix mining enclaves, workers are kept from the truth of the republic they serve. Among them is Alkon, a cold, watchful young exile living an obscure life as a maintenance worker.

Far to the south, the death of the republic’s president opens a struggle at the center of power. Beyond its borders, rival states begin calculating how long the existing balance can survive.

In the Chinese Republic, Liang, a senior figure in the strategic-material establishment, is trying to keep both the state and her daughter Yulan alive. Yulan depends on medicine arriving through a hidden western route, even as mounting resource pressure pushes China toward the most destabilizing act in generations.
